Red poppies take center stage in this hand-painted jar design, adding a cheerful pop of color and personality. These jars make thoughtful gifts—ideal for holding candies, tiny surprises, or keepsakes. Don't miss the video at the end of this post for a closer look at how to bring this design to life!
For this project, we will need the following:
- acrylic paint pens of your choice. I used Posca paint pens in Red, White, Black and Blue. You can always use regular acrylic paint if that's what you have
- small, clean glass jar or other vessel
Start by making four organically shaped red petals in an overall circular shape. Fill the petals in with red and let them dry. Dot these blooms around your jar as you please. Try to make a few using only two or three petals, as if viewing from the side of the flower.

Next, use black to add the center of each flower. A circular or oval shape works best. Be sure to leave off this step on your blooms that you made as if viewed from the side.

Time to add the stems! Using your blue pen (or paint and brush) make the stems from the bottom of the blooms to the bottom of the jar. Don't make the stems in too much of a straight line. Make some of them slightly curved, as you might see in nature.
Using the same blue, make jagged-looking leaves coming out from the stems. Be sure to watch the video at the end of this post if you'd like to see how I make mine.

For a final touch, I used a white pen to add snow/polka dots in the spaces between the poppies. (I'm originally a Kansas girl, so you know I'm a big Wizard of Oz fan!)
With just a little paint and creativity, you can turn an ordinary glass jar into a keepsake to cherish. I hope this tutorial sparks your imagination and encourages you to try something new. Happy painting!
